Trends in Online Standardized Assessments in U.S. Schools
Grace Choi, Professor and Chair, Department of Secondary Education
For well over a decade, school districts in the U.S. have increasingly relied on the use of technology to administer and score mandated summative student assessments. The adoption of the Common Core State Standards has accelerated the shift to online testing. The 2015-16 school year was the first in which more state-required summative assessments in U.S. middle and elementary schools which was delivered via technology rather than paper-and-pencil (EdTech Strategies, 2015).
Dr. Choi's presentation will summarize the current status of online testing in the United States, provide examples of the California Smarter Balanced elementary online testing items, and review preliminary findings on research on U.S. initial online testing attempts.
